In Error, Md. Men Get Selective Service Letters

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- The independent federal agency that manages draft registration says it accidentally sent letters to thousands of men in Maryland telling them they need to register, even though they've already done so.

The Selective Service System says in a message posted on its website that the letters were the result of an error in its computer processing system.

Radio station WTOP reports the problem notices will have the recipient's first and last names transposed, and can be disregarded by anyone who is already registered. The letters are dated April 23, 2014 and likely went to thousands of male Marylanders between the ages of 18 and 25.

Men have to register with the agency in case a military draft is instituted.
