WASHINGTON (AP) — Businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein will become the next chairman of an advisory group that helps to guide the Library of Congress in Washington.

The library announced Tuesday that Rubenstein will serve as the next chairman of the library’s James Madison Council, an advisory and fundraising group. Rubenstein will succeed outgoing chairman H.F. Lenfest, a Philadelphia philanthropist who will step down in October.

Rubenstein, who is co-CEO of The Carlyle Group, has been a major supporter of the library and its National Book Festival. He has been a member of the Madison Council since 2005.

The Baltimore native also is chairman of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and of Duke University’s board. He is a regent of the Smithsonian Institution and president of the Economic Club of Washington.
