Adventists Propose Closing Md. Printing Operation
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Seventh-day Adventist Church is proposing shutting down a Hagerstown printing plant that employs 110 workers.
General Vice President Delbert Baker said Tuesday that the proposal partly reflects reduced demand for printed material in the Internet age.
The move will take effect July 1 if a proposed restructuring of the church's two publishing houses is approved by their constituent members.
The 30-year-old Hagerstown plant is run by the Review and Herald Publishing Association. The church says it will offer some workers jobs at its Pacific Press Publishing Association in Nampa, Idaho, but some jobs will be lost.
The Review and Herald corporate offices would move from Hagerstown to the church headquarters in Silver Spring.
The church cut 26 jobs at the 30-year-old Hagerstown plant last month.
