Metro To Take Over Silver Line Later This Month

McLEAN, Va. (AP) -- The agency that operates the region's Metrorail system expects to take control of the behind-schedule Silver Line extension through Tysons Corner later this month.

An exact opening date is still not set. It was supposed to have opened at the end of 2013.

The $2.9 billion project was built by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which oversees Reagan and Dulles airports.

Eventually, the Silver Line will extend out to Dulles, though that phase of the project is still several years away.

On Monday, Metro General Manager Richard Sarles said his agency will take control of the line from MWAA later this month. That starts a window of up to 90 days for testing and training.

Sarles said he hopes passengers might be able to use the line by early August.
