Man Shot Multiple Times The Latest In Spate Of Violence Across City

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Homicide detectives are responding to the shooting of a man in Northwest Baltimore. It's part of a spate of violence that's left nearly a dozen people shot since Wednesday night. Now city leaders and the police are battling back going into this holiday weekend.

Meghan McCorkell has more on what's being done.

Last year, 12 people were shot over the Memorial Day holiday in Baltimore City. This year is already off to a violent start.

Clothing and a hat remain in the road on Mount Street, where a 21-year-old man was shot multiple times Friday afternoon and taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. Family members say violence has overtaken their community.

"It's just ridiculous that you can't be in your own neighborhood without getting hurt. It's crazy," said Terry Chase, victim's aunt.

"Now you can't even sit outside. You can't even go on the playground without taking your kids and grabbing them and running for cover," said Reggie Sollers, victim's uncle.

Their nephew is one of at least 10 people shot in the city in just three days. The violent streak includes two triple shootings that happened less than 14 hours apart.

Friday night, community members came together to march through West Baltimore to take a stand against the shootings.

"It's definitely concerning. I stay by my phone at 3, 4, 5 o'clock in the morning hopefully ensuring that we go through the night safe," said Nick Mosby, Baltimore City Council.

City police plan top step up patrols over the holiday weekend to try and stop more violence.

"We increased our deployment. We know the focused areas that have been problematic over the years, so we're putting extra resources out there," said Commissioner Anthony Batts, Baltimore City Police.

Officers also increased checks on violent repeat offenders going into the weekend. Now as police patrol, the community comes together to pray for a peaceful weekend.

Maryland State Police will also help patrol the city this weekend, targeting guns and drugs.

Faith leaders and police will hold a traveling peace rally on May 31, called the "Bless Baltimore Prayer Motorcade."
