Cardin Says Md. Wind Farm Must Respect Navy Needs

HOLLYWOOD, Md. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin says firm rules are needed to ensure that a wind farm under development on the Eastern Shore doesn't interfere with fighter jet testing at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station across the Chesapeake Bay.

The Maryland Democrat met Monday with defense contractors and southern Maryland economic development officials to discuss issues involving the air station.

He says the 25-turbine Great Bay wind power project planned by Texas-based Pioneer Green Energy in Somerset County remains a concern. Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley vetoed a bill last month that would have placed a 13-month moratorium on construction.

Opponents say the spinning blades could compromise radar that tests the stealth capabilities of fighter jets. The developer has offered to turn off the turbines during test flights.
