Kennedy Center Opens Weeklong Choral Festival

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Kennedy Center is opening a weeklong choral music festival featuring dozens of choirs from across the country.

"Voices of Our Nation: Celebrating the Choral Tradition" opens Monday evening with choruses performing at six Metro stops in D.C., Maryland and Virginia and at the Kennedy Center. Choirs are scheduled to perform at Navy Yard, Takoma, L'Enfant Plaza, King Street, Columbia Heights and Dupont Circle.

On Tuesday, the festival features military choirs at the Kennedy Center, followed by a gospel showcase Wednesday. On Friday, the festival will feature a performance by composer and conductor Eric Whitacre and The Crossing, a Philadelphia-based professional choir.

The festival culminates with a national sing-a-long of the national anthem Saturday, marking the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
