D.C. Pot Group Submits Ballot Initiative Signatures

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of a ballot initiative that would let District of Columbia voters decide whether possession of up to two ounces of marijuana should be legal in the nation’s capital say they’ve got the signatures required to put the measure on November’s ballot.

The D.C. Cannabis Campaign says the group submitted more than 55,000 signatures to elections officials on Monday. That’s twice the required number needed to put the issue before voters. Campaign organizers say it took less than 75 days to collect the signatures.

Congress could still frustrate the group’s efforts, however.

Earlier this year, city lawmakers decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana, but the law has faced opposition in Congress, which reviews all new laws in the district.
