UB Creates Scholarship Named For Schmoke's Brother

BALTIMORE (AP) -- University of Baltimore President Kurt Schmoke is establishing a new scholarship fund for local high school graduates in honor of his late brother.

The fund will benefit students enrolled in UB's College of Public Affairs. It's named for Schmoke's younger brother, Murray Alexander Schmoke Jr., who died in a car accident in 1994 while volunteering as an English teacher in South Africa.

Kurt Schmoke was mayor of Baltimore at the time of his brother's death. He says his brother was a lifelong learner whose interest in public affairs led him to South Africa.

To be eligible, a student must be a graduate of a Baltimore public high school with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
