Girl, 8, Dies After Swim In Rockville, Md., Pool

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County police say it's not clear what caused the death of an 8-year-old girl who lost consciousness after swimming in at the public Rockville Swim Center in Rockville.

Police said Thursday that the state medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine what killed Stephanie Benitez on Tuesday.

Investigators learned that Benitez had jumped from a diving board into the deep end of the pool and swum to a nearby ladder. When she reached the ladder, she lacked the strength to climb out of the water and began making what were described as unusual movements.

Police say lifeguards pulled her from the pool and began treatment, but the girl was unresponsive. She was flown to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead that night.
