Police Capture Suspects Involved In Rape Of Teenager They Met On Instagram

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Two men are behind bars, charged with raping a 14-year-old Laurel girl they met on Instagram.

Laurel Police Detective Adam Cheek is being credited with helping D.C. police make the arrests. Cheek learned the 14-year-old victim had been communicating with 19-year-old Javon Henson on the social media site.

Police say Henson and a man posing as his father went to the girl's home in Laurel on July 13th and convinced her mother to let his son "hang out with her" for the day.

As it turns out the father, wasn't related to Henson after all. Police say he was a registered sex offender named Orlando Roberts.

Police say both men took the girl to a house in D.C. where they took turns raping and sexually assaulting the victim. They then drove her back to Laurel.

Detective Cheek was able to identify both suspects and locate the house in Washington D.C. where the girl was assaulted. He turned that information over to D.C. police who made the arrest.

"These two suspects were able to trick the girl's mother into letting her leave with them, but they made some key mistakes that helped me locate them." Cheek said.

"I'm so glad they are off the street," he said.

The detective says the case is wakeup call for parents.

"They need to know who their children are communicating with on social media. They should know their passwords. Get on the site. Find out what your kids are saying. And most importantly, find out who they're saying it to," Cheek said.

D.C. Police have filed sexual assault and other charges against both suspects who are now in custody.
