Montgomery Schools Adopt New Code Of Conduct

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County schools have issued a new code of conduct that emphasizes disciplinary measures that allow students to learn from mistakes.

The Washington Post reports that the code of conduct also makes clear that out-of-school suspensions should be a last resort.
County officials say it's the first time the school system has written a code of conduct. Discipline issues were previously addressed in a handbook of rights and responsibilities given to students.

It was written in the wake of new regulations from the Maryland State Board of Education. The board has urged school systems to take a more rehabilitative approach to school discipline and reduce racial disparities.

Montgomery officials say many of the ideas behind the code of conduct were already in use.
