Local Muslims React To ISIS

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Even after President Barack Obama addressed the threat of ISIS, many wonder if it's too little, too late. There's growing frustrating from people who say the US isn't doing enough to stop the powerful extremist group. Muslims in Maryland and a prominent Congressman are both calling for stronger action.

Christie Ileto has the growing frustration.

Disturbing images surface. Scott Sotloff is the second American beheaded by ISIS militants in retaliation for US air strikes.

"The first reaction is disgust," said Michael Smith III, Islamic Society of Annapolis. "They by no means, by no way, represent what Islam is."

Local Muslim groups are appalled by the Islamic extremists and have been anxious for the president's plan that came Wednesday.

"If I have to thank [him], I have to thank him for waking up and saying something today," said Rudwan Abu-Rumman, president of Anne Arundel County Muslim Council.

"I think the president was a lot stronger today. He needs to reassure the American people," said Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger.

On CNN, Ruppersberger hammers we need an end game.

"How is that going to stop [ISIS]? How are we going to stop recruiting?" he said.

Some are skeptical that plan is just brave words.

"If it is done, I'm satisfied with it but the question is, is it going to be done and when?" Abu-Rumman said.

Still, it goes beyond stopping ISIS.

"All I can do here is be a window of opportunity to show what the true message of Islam means here in America," Smith said.

President Obama announced 350 additional troops to Iraq to protest US embassy personnel.
