Montgomery County Tells Uber To Follow Taxi Rules
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County officials want to know how Uber expanded its popular ride-sharing service into Bethesda without applying for county licenses.
The Washington Post reports the county is demanding that Uber explain why it's not complying with rules that govern the county's taxi companies. Uber began serving Bethesda last year.
Taxicab companies say Uber operates with an unfair advantage by ignoring regulations on fares, insurance and other requirements.
County Transportation Director Arthur Holmes sent a letter to Uber's CEO on Aug. 5, but officials say there's been no response.
Uber spokesman Taylor Bennett says trying to force outdated regulations on modern technologies only restricts competition and choice in the marketplace.
Last month, the Maryland Public Service Commission ruled Uber's high-end black car and SUV services are subject to state regulations.
