Baltimore Orioles Playoff History

We take a look back at every Baltimore Orioles post season appearance & result:

2014:

An Orioles squad that was picked to be improved, but not a contender surprised the entire league by taking the AL East Championship. What made it more surprising was the fact that the Orioles lost Matt Wieters & Manny Machado to injuries during the season & still got it done winning 96 games & winning the east by 12 games. The Orioles swept the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS, but in turn were swept by the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS.

2012

A 14 year losing season streak was broken with a 93-69 season & a 3rd place finish in the AL East. The O's won the AL Wild Card Vs. The Texas Rangers to advance to the AL  Division Series, but were eliminated 3 games to 2 by the New York Yankees.

Impact Player (season):  Adam Jones

1997

The O's went wire to wire when they won the AL East in 1997 & finished the season with a 98-64 record. The Orioles won the AL Division series versus the Mariners 3-1, but lost the AL championship series 4-2 to the Cleveland Indians

1996

The '96 Orioles finished 2nd in the AL East with an 88-74 Record & made the post-season as the AL Wild Card.  The O's also broke the all-time record for home runs in a season with 257. The Orioles defeated the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS 3-1 and then lost 4-1 in the ALCS to the New York Yankees.

1983

Orioles Magic! The 1983 Orioles team finished 1st in the AL East  with a 98-64 record on the way to their most recent  Word Series victory. The Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox 3-1 before defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in the "I-95 series" in 5 games, 4-1 with an amazing postseason by World Series MVP Rick Dempsey.

1979

The Orioles finished the season with 102 wins on their way to the AL East Title with a very strong team. They handled the California Angels 3-1 in the ALCS before falling to a Sister Sledge & Willie Stargell led Pittsburgh Pirates in 7 games 4-3 in the 1979 World Series.

1974

The 1974 Orioles finished 1st in the AL East with a record of 91-71, but lost in the Al Championship series 3-1 to the Oakland Athletics.

1973

The 1973 Baltimore Orioles finished 1st the AL East with a 97-65 record.  They lost to the Oakland A's 3-2 in the ALCS.

1971

The  '71 O's won the AL east with  101 wins & 57 losses.  1971 was the season the Orioles had 4 20 game winners in Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar, and Pat Dobson, a feat that has never been accomplished again in Baseball. In the Post-season the Orioles defeated the Oakland A's 3-0 in the ALCS, but lost the World series 4 games to 3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Impact Player (season): Brooks Robinson

1970

The 1970 Baltimore Orioles won the AL east with 108 wins & 54 losses, 15 games ahead of the Yankees.  In the playoffs they swept the Minnesota Twins 3 games to O & handled the "Big Red Machine" & Sparkey Anderson of the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1 to win the World Series. Brooks Robinson earned his reputation with amazing post season play that established him as one of the all time greats at 3rd base.

1969

1969 was the 1st season the American League was split & the Orioles won the first ever AL east title with a record of 109-53.   The Orioles swept the Minnesota Twins in the 1st ALCS but lost the World Series 4 games to 1 at the hands of the "Miracle Mets"

Impact Player (season): Mike Cuellar (AL Cy Young Co-Award Winner)

1966

In '66 the Orioles won their 1st World Series after finishing first in the American League with a record of 97-63. The O's swept the NL Champion LA Dodgers 4-0 to take home their 1st World championship.  The Orioles won the 4 games 5-2, 6-0, 1-0 & 1-0. This was Frank Robinson's 1st year with the team after being acquired in the "65 off -season & the Orioles defeated a stellar pitching staff on the Dodgers that included Don Drysdale & Sandy Koufax
