Md. Man 1st U.S. Canoeist To Win Gold At World Championships In 12 Years

MCHENRY, Md. (AP) -- Canoeist Fabien Lefevre is America's first gold medalist in a world whitewater slalom event in 12 years.

The 32-year-old former French paddler won in the men's single canoe event Saturday at the International Canoe Federation world slalom championships in McHenry, near Deep Creek Lake. This is his second season on the U.S. team. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

The last American team member to win gold in a world championship whitewater slalom event was kayaker Rebecca Giddens in 2002.

Jessica Fox of Australia won in women's single canoe Saturday and women's single kayak on Sunday.

Boris Neveu of France won in men's single kayak Saturday.

The Slovakian team of Luka Bozic and Saso Taljat won the men's double canoe event on Sunday.
