Baltimore Nursing Managers Are In High Demand

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of medical and health services managers is projected to grow 23 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations." And modernhealthcare.com projects a very bright future for those interested in a career in health care coordination and management, "Demand for people who can effectively coordinate care and perform these multiple tasks has skyrocketed in recent years as payers and providers turn to health care delivery models aimed at lowering costs by keeping people with serious chronic conditions out of hospitals and in their homes."

Mike Hamburg is the nurse manager at Northwest Hospital in Maryland, which is part of LifeBridge Health. Hamburg earned an associate, bachelor and master's degrees in nursing. He offers some great advice for those looking to further their career through advanced degrees.

How does your experience in formal education relate to your current role?

"The classes I took were comprehensive, and gave me the opportunity to learn about many different aspects of nursing and not be boxed into one area. Included in my studies were general nursing, how to become an educator and how to develop leadership skills. I use these things every day on the job when I help my staff with their duties, when I am involved in modifying processes designed to give patients the best care, and when I interact with my bosses."

How has your education helped to further your career and contribute to your success?

"The knowledge and skills I learned while I was earning my B.S.N. and M.S.N. were very instrumental in advancing my career to where I am today. My main interest has always been emergency medicine, and because of my degrees, I had the confidence and background to progress to a Clinical Supervisor and now to a Nurse Manager. Along the way, my responsibilities involved quality initiatives and staff management, being able to apply previous research to enhance current processes, and to effectively manage workflow."

What is some advice you can offer others going into the field of nursing?

"You have to be able to embrace change. Medicine and nursing are continuously evolving. I would also suggest being interested in keeping up with research because knowing the most recent trends is essential to continue to advance in the nursing profession."
