Scott Garceau: Game On In Series

Forget that "It ain't over till it's over" and that Fat Lady stuff. If the Giants would have won Game 2 of the World Series it was O-V-E-R. Cue Jarrod Dyson for his latest hit rap, "it's not coming back to Kansas City and we know it." If the Giants returned home up 2 games to none about the only questions remaining, what day is the victory parade in San Francisco? But hold the parade the Royals are back after a one game sabbatical. They got punched in the nose in Game 1 and apparently didn't like it.

The Royals came out swinging in game 2 and their 5-run explosion in the 6th inning has them looking like the same team that swept the Orioles in the ALCS and came into the World Series 8-0 this postseason. In the defining 6th inning Lorenzo Cain came flying around third base like Secretariat to break a 2-2 tie, and then Sal Perez drove in 2 more with a deep shot to the left-center gap it was 5-2. They weren't done, the Perez double was followed by a 2-run homer by Omar Infante and the fans at The K were officially cuckoo for KC.

Meanwhile Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland was melting down and apparently decided if he couldn't pitch why not try martial arts. Strickland's tough guy act cleared the benches and bullpens and he was escorted from the mound. His boorish behavior was bad but not ejection worthy; instead he was dismissed by his own for his gas-can inflammatory relief pitching. Strickland has faced 23 batters this postseason and given up FIVE home runs. He's just the second pitcher in history to give up 5 homers in a single postseason.

The Royals didn't win the World Series by winning game 2 but they did avoid losing it. The Giants still have an edge with 3 of the 5 remaining games in San Francisco. How important will Game 3 be Friday night in San Francisco? When the World Series is tied 1-1, the winner of Game 3 goes on to win the series 70 percent of the time (38-16). Make what you'd like of the numbers but you don't need to be a math major to know that the Royals have made this Series a lot more interesting.

Game On!
