Child Injured In Anne Arundel Accident After Man Refuses To Stop For Police

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) -- A 12-year-old boy sustained minor injuries after a car accident Saturday.

According to police, the driver was speeding and refused to stop for a state trooper. The driver, Gary Eldridge Jr., later lost control of the car and hit a tree.

Police explain the trooper was traveling north on I-97, just south of Rt. 176, when he was passed by a 2002 Saturn going approximately 100 miles an hour. The trooper activated his emergency lights, but Eldridge didn't stop and took the Rt. 176 exit.

The trooper was not able to catch the car but was able to see it run through a red light at Rt. 648 and cross onto 8th Avenue. Eldridge lost control of the vehicle and it traveled off the right side of the road, striking a tree. Eldridge fled the scene on foot.

The trooper who originally tried to stop the car arrived and found 12-year-old David Vance in the car. Anne Arundel County Police located the driver a short time later and he was taken to the hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates Eldridge's driver's license is suspended. The child is the son of Eldridge's girlfriend. The car apparently belongs to a friend of Eldridge.

Charges are pending.
