Phelps' DUI Trial Postponed To Dec. 19

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps' trial date for his drunk driving charges has been postponed to Dec. 19.

The request was made by the Phelps' attorney and was initially scheduled for later this month.

The 29-year-old Phelps was arrested for a DUI on Sept. 30 just before 2 a.m. outside the Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Maryland Transportation Authority police stopped him for speeding and found that his blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit.

Phelps entered himself into a six-week treatment program to better understand himself.

He was banned from competing with USA Swimming until March 6, 2015 -- the decision means he will not represent the U.S. in the World Championships in Russia next summer. He is also would forfeiting his monthly stipend for six months as well. He can , however, train in its facilities.

On the night of his arrest, he'd spent hours drinking and gambling at Baltimore's new Horseshoe Casino.
