Baltimore Student Got To Take Torrey Smith To School

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- If you're a kid, taking a professional football player to school seems a little far-fetched. But for one Baltimore City student, it was a dream that became a reality Monday.

Jessica Kartalija explains.

Hours after playing a good game at M&T Bank Stadium, it's back to class for wide receiver Torrey Smith. Monday morning at Northeast Middle School, Smith talked about how important it is to stay in school.

"I knew that in order for me to make it to college and for me to better my life, I needed a college education," Smith said.

Smith visited the school as part of a contest by WJZ-FM 105.7 The Fan. Daniel Andrews was chosen out of 400 students to bring Torrey to class. He took time to field questions from students.

"If I wasn't a football player, what would I be? I graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in criminal justice," he said. "I used to always say I wanted to be a veterinarian."

Before Smith headed home, Daniel got some one-on-one time with the star athlete.

"It was pretty good getting some pointers from Torrey Smith," he said. "He said, `Don't let anyone get in front of you when you're trying to do something.'"

There were more than 400 applicants from Baltimore City schools. Daniel was randomly chosen to have Torrey come to class.
