Nick Novak Talks Chargers And Terps

San Diego Chargers kicker and former Maryland Terp Nick Novak joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn and Jason La Canfora to talk about the Chargers making the trip from the west coast to take on the Ravens this Sunday. Nick is coming back to the area after playing for the Terps in college. Scott asked if Nick has plans to check up with old friends. "Yeah they're playing Rutgers this on Saturday against Ralph Friedgen, so that's an exciting match-up and a couple of old teammates live in the area, so I'll catch up with them on Saturday."

The Chargers held a lead late in the game on Sunday when Baltimore native Tavon Austin almost returned a Kickoff for a touchdown. Nick took through how he was feeling as the Rams were threatening to win the game. "Yeah you know they were down inside the 5 yard line and I'm in my net getting ready for overtime and I'm thinking the defense is going to stop them and they'll kick a field goal so I'm just waiting for that to happen… Then Gilchrest who said earlier too me that he couldn't catch a pass in warmups, and then he ends up catching the interception to seal the game. And sometimes as kicker you have the worst warmups and you end up having your best games, and that's how it works out sometimes."

The big knock on West Coast teams in the NFL, especially the Chargers, is that they often struggle in 1:00 games played on the East Coast. Jeremy asked Nick if San Diego buys into that school of thought. "No we don't buy into that because we practice so early out here. It's just a 10:00 game I guess. But overall we're up very early and we're used to that."
