Baltimore Student Earns Rhodes Scholarship

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's among the most prestigious scholarships in the world and it's going to a student right here in Baltimore.

Jessica Kartalija has the details.

A senior at Johns Hopkins is on his way to becoming a leader in cancer research and medical science.

Peter Kalugin has a lot on his plate.

"We transform DNA into e coli cells," he said.

Kalugin is studying the biology of cancer cells. Gaining hands on experience in the lab at the school of medicine.

"He is very efficient, mature and a quick learner and extremely smart and passionate about research," Takanari Inoue, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University.

Qualities that make him worth of the most prestigious scholarship for students in America.

"Now I've been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship. I already spent a year at Oxford studying abroad and now I get to go back for two years and do a masters degree in oncology and I am really, really excited about that," Kalugin said.

Originally from Russia, his physicist father, brought the family to the U.S. a decade ago. Kalugin lived in Albuquerque before coming to Hopkins.

He will pursue a masters in oncology at a state-of-the-art cancer research center in Oxford.

"It an opportunity for me to learn how to be a leader in science and specifically biomedical research," Kalugin said.

Ultimately, he wants to return to the U.S. to go to medical school and pursue a doctorate -- something he's already preparing for.

"It would be nice to get into Hopkins," Kalugin said. "I really enjoyed my time here."
