Steve Davis: Duquette To Toronto?

This was obviously a huge story Sunday, that the Blue Jays have interest in Dan Duquette to be their CEO. I would too, if I was them. He has done a tremendous job. And, if I was Duquette, I would be interested in the job.

Nothing against the Orioles, but the chance to be President and CEO is a once in a lifetime kind of opportunity. It would be a huge raise. The Blue Jays have the resources to spend a lot of money. Plus, the standard in Major League Baseball is to allow people to leave franchises, even if they are under contract, for a promotion.

That said, this shouldn't be allowed to happen. MLB should tell the Blue Jays, if you want Duquette, you can try again next fall as soon as the season ends for both teams. This would cripple the Orioles and their off-season plans. They would have to go raid another team for a new GM.

Is that fair?

The Blue Jays are going about this all wrong. They are supposed to fill out paperwork and request permission if the are interested in another team's executive. The way this is happening, with names being floated through the media, is bush league.

Dan Duquette has a contract through 2018. Peter Angelos basically rescued him from Siberia and resuscitated his career. Something is rotten in Denmark, so to speak, if he is allowed to leave the Orioles for Toronto.
