Baltimore Relief Group Heads To Help Those Affected By Typhoon

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A devastating weather disaster halfway around the world. A typhoon battered the Philippines and now one million people have been forced into shelters. The people there are no strangers to destruction.

Christie Ileto explains a Baltimore relief group is on the ground helping.

Dozens dead and neighborhoods ravaged. The destruction in a small Philippine coastal town tells the story of a community cleaning up.

Typhoon Hagupit first made landfall Saturday. At last check, around 2,500 homes were either damaged or destroyed.

"My house is broken; my house is broken," said one resident.

A relief team from Baltimore is already on the scene.

"Of 20 different neighborhoods that I saw, only one has electricity so people are doing the best they can," said Liz O'Neill, Lutheran World Relief.

O'Neill spoke by phone. The agency works with 35 nations providing disaster assistance.

"The point of my trip today is to find out how they are and find out what they need," she said.

It was around this time last year Lutheran World Relief helped the Philippines, only it was for Typhoon Haiyan, which killed thousands and left millions homeless. This is a long road to recovery for those still cleaning up from the last powerful typhoon.

Lutheran World Relief says cash donations are the best way to help relief efforts, allowing them to buy supplies and non-perishable food for residents. To donate, click here.
