Baltimore Social Worker Specializes In Helping Dialysis Patients
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work is a growing field projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations which is estimated at about 11 percent. Each state regulates licensing requirements for social workers; Maryland requirements are outlined under the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene/Md Board of Social Work Examiners. Most social work positions require both a bachelor's and a master's degree.
David Kaplan is a renal social worker (LGSW) at Davita Dialysis Center in Baltimore, he specializes in providing dialysis patients with ongoing support as they cope with major changes to their health and lifestyle.
Kaplan graduated with a B.A. in psychology from SUNY Old Westbury and a master's in social work (M.S.W.) from the Greater Rochester Collaborative MSW Program which is a public/private partnership in social work education between the College at Brockport and Nazareth College of Rochester.
What inspired you to enter your current field?
"I was working as an EISEP Case Manager in Rochester, NY visiting frail seniors in their homes and evaluating them for in-home services."
"I learned a lot about how chronic illness affects qualify of life. One of my clients was experiencing kidney failure and had to confront starting dialysis, a major life change which was difficult to process. I learned more about dialysis and about the social workers' role in a dialysis center."
"It is extremely rewarding to meet a new patient in the midst of crisis, join them on their journey, and then find ways to make their situation more positive."
How does your educational background relate to your current role?
"Both a B.A. in psychology and a M.S.W. is beneficial in my current role. I have the ability to meet a patient, get an understanding of their physical and emotional experience and then intervene to improve their quality of life."
How has your education helped to further your career and contribute to your success?
"The M.S.W. degree which is the requirement for most social work positions, prepared me for practice with patients. As far as career success, I've found that hard work, dedication to the company's goals, and volunteering for projects helps build a reputation as an asset to the company."
What is some advice you can offer others looking to go into your field?
"I suggest taking a wide range of courses and using internships and volunteer opportunities to experience different fields. Take inventory of your skills, take opportunities to develop them, and use your passion to guide you to where you will be happiest and most successful."
