Md. Deputies Shroud Badges For Slain NY Officers
WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- Sheriff's deputies in Carroll County are wearing shrouds over their badges to honor two police officers in New York.
Sheriff James DeWees says deputies will wear the shrouds from Monday through New Year's Eve.
Though deputies typically wear shrouds when a Maryland officer is killed, the sheriff says it's important to recognize Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. They were killed Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn after being ambushed by a gunman. The gunman killed himself soon after.
DeWees says law officers "put their lives on the line and walk into situations that few would have the guts to handle."
He says everyone owes officers a debt of gratitude, "not insults or violent acts that injure or take lives."
