Police Interview Owings Mills Woman Shot By Suspect In NYPD Murders

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (WJZ) --Rochelle Ritchie reports on what Baltimore County police are saying about the suspect and the shooting victim in Owings Mills.

Baltimore County police officials say even though this incident started in Maryland, it is more of a New York case. Investigators spoke with the 29-year-old shooting victim, Shaneka Thompson, who survived from her hospital bed, but they were only able to speak with her for less than an hour.

Baltimore County police said at 5:25 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, Ismaaiyl Brinsley knocked out the door of his ex-girlfriend's apartment in Owings Mills.

"Somehow he got into that building and then he knocked on her apartment door and she answered it," Baltimore County police spokesperson Elise Armacost said.

Speaking to investigators from her hospital bed in Baltimore, Thompson, a member of the Air Force reserves says she and Brinsley started arguing about the status of their relationship right before he shot her.

"This woman tells us that he never mentioned police... that never came up," Armacost said. "The argument on Saturday morning was about them and their relationship."

Baltimore County police say Brinsley has no connection to Maryland, besides his ex-girlfriend, but his criminal record spans across multiple states.

Brinsley's run-in with the law dates back several years with prior arrests in Georgia where he was wanted for an outstanding warrant for violating his probation and four arrests in Ohio.

Contrary to statements from the Ohio police department, Baltimore County police said Brinsley did not have a key to Thompson's apartment which is a secure and gated community.

Thompson was shot in the abdomen. She remains in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

Baltimore County police also tell WJZ that after Brinsley stole his ex-girlfriend's cell phone, he actually called her mother to apologize and there's no word to how he got to Maryland or how he got to New York.
