Weather Elements Impacting Holiday Travel

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- Christie Ileto has the details on tonight's weather and it's complicating making plans for holiday travel really hard.

Millions of Marylanders are traveling this holiday season, particularly tonight on Christmas Eve. Traffic was absolutely a problem for some, but the elements, the rain, the mist, even the dense fog proves to be the biggest challenge.

Let the mad dash begin.

"I'm heading to Wilmington, Delaware," one traveler said.

"Connecticut," another traveler said.

"We're heading to New York," a traveler said.

Raoul and Andrea Welcome are two of 2.1 million Marylanders hitting the roads to see family this holiday.

When asked what the current conditions of roads are...

"A lot of fog," said. "Woo 20 percent visibility."

On any other night, you'd be able to see traffic on 95, but fog is the biggest for Marylanders hitting the roads and that means take it easy behind the wheel.

A passenger takes this video of the thick fog while heading to North Carolina, while another driver narrowly avoids hitting a deer, but some drivers prove no match for mother nature.

Multiple accidents are reported around Baltimore's beltway in the final hours of Christmas Eve.

"It's all about getting there safe," a traveler said.

Delays are minor at Penn Station.

"The trains were only half full," traveler Maria Holt said.

And the crowds are light.

"I thought it would be very crowded," a traveler said.

A similar story at BWI, despite constant showers blanketing Baltimore.

Still plunging prices at the pump are driving more to travel by car this holiday.

When asked what they do to pass the time....

"I usually play with my iPad or my brothers," a young traveler said.

Despite mother nature's plans to slow down Marylanders on their last minute dash out the door.

Travel experts say Sunday will be a rather hectic and busy travel day.

AAA says nine out of ten people will travel by cars this holiday. Five percent will fly.
