Woman Dies In Christmas Morning Fire In Md.

CAPITOL HEIGHTS (WJZ) --A early Christmas morning fire turns fatal in Prince George's County.

Firefighters responded to a fire in a two-story duplex in the 900 block of Booker Drive in Capitol Heights Thursday morning at 2:15 a.m. for a report of a woman trapped on the second floor.

An 87-year-old woman was trapped inside after a fire broke out on the first floor of the home. A man was awakened by the smoke alarm and tried to help his mother on the second floor, but had to leave due to intense heat and smoke.

Once firefighters extinguished the flames they found the woman and she was pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and the fire loss is still being calculated.

Firefighters will return to the neighborhood Friday afternoon to conduct a Post Incident Neighborhood Intervention Program, meaning they will go door-to-door in the Booker Drive neighborhood, answer any questions about fires and check to make sure everyone has a working smoke alarm and an escape plan.

Firefighters will also conduct another PINIP in Bowie where an 83-year-old man died in a fatal fire in Bowie on Christmas Eve.
