WEATHER BLOG: Saturday

Latest surface analysis shows high pressure centered over the Carolinas early this morning and a general ridge at the surface along much of the Eastern Seaboard. This is promoting a general westsouthwest gradient across the area, although the gradient is weak. Satellite shows some high level clouds spreading across the mid-Atlantic with low clouds from upstate New York into northern New England. Mild temperatures will grace us once again Saturday. While the day will not feature clear skies like we experienced Friday, the high level clouds will not be thick enough to obscure the sun.

A cold front is lurking to our west and will continue its eastward push through the weekend and into Monday. Clouds will thicken tonight ahead of this front and it will be overcast on Sunday. Upperlevel dynamics will not be strong with this system and forcing will be modest. There can be a spotty shower around Sunday morning, but more widespread rain is most likely in the afternoon. It will not be as mild Sunday due to clouds and rain, but temperatures will still be well above normal for late December. It will rain at times Sunday night and into Monday morning.

Otherwise, next week will generally feature temperatures below average for this time of year with dry conditions. New Year's Eve night will be chilly with temperatures falling into the 20s. Both the GFS and ECMWF bring a moisture-laden storm into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast after New Year's Day. The EURO is faster with precipitation arriving Friday night, while the GFS brings precipitation in during the day Saturday. Either way, the weekend looks unsettled across the region.
