WEATHER BLOG: Sunday

The cold air in the lowest parts of the atmosphere is slowly getting scoured out this morning as temperatures have risen into the 40s everywhere and the threat for ice has clearly ended. Nevertheless, low clouds and locally dense fog and some rain prevails. Over the next 12 hours, increasing winds aloft from the southwest ahead of an approaching cold front will begin to mix down toward the surface and bring several hours of very mild weather later today, with temps likely rising above 60. This aforementioned cold front will also be a focus for showers, and some downpours. Early this morning, a several-hundred mile wide zone of showers stretches ahead of the front from central PA to the east-central Gulf Coast. These showers will overspread our region this morning, causing much of the morning to be wet. By afternoon, rain will become more scattered in nature, allowing for some limited drying. The cold front will sweep through the region very late this afternoon accompanied by some gusty showers. It's right around this time when temperatures will be at their highest, likely reaching above 60 for a couple hours.

Once the front passes, strong winds gusting past 30 mph from the west will send drier air into the region Sunday night and cause skies to partially clear. Temperatures will fall quickly through the 40s and 30s, falling to around 32 by daybreak Monday. On Monday, winds from the west-northwest will remain very gusty as temperatures hold steady in the low 30s and then fall. The cold winds gathering moisture from the upstream Great Lakes will result in patchy clouds and a few stray flurries in PA, but here in Maryland conditions will be mainly sunny.
