Snowfall Causes Late Start In Carroll Co.

CARROLL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)-- Outside Baltimore, snow came down a little heavier in western Maryland.

The mess that slowed the Baltimore metro region stretched west, well into the late morning, until plows hit side roads. WJZ's Alex DeMetrick spent the morning in Carroll County and has more.

"They're a little rough. It's been hard to kind of get to where you want to go, while avoiding people who have already pulled off," said Eric Holniker.

Freezing temperatures didn't help, even with a powdery snow.

"The temps are a lot lower so it's a little more difficult to deal with. The salt isn't doing as good a job as when the temps are warmer. But we'll take care of it," said Don McDonald.

It was the kind of weather where getting a later start made a lot of sense.

"Yes. Usually I'm at work by ten-thirty, but it's about 11 o'clock"

By then, main routes were just wet and wide open.

While on the home front, the usual winter pastimes were in full swing.

"It's pretty dry and light; shoveling is not too bad. My daughter back here is have a great time," said Rob Caswell.

"I never made a snowman before," said his daughter.

And it doesn't take a long memory to know it can always be worse.

"30 inch snowstorms back-to-back was kind of a killer," said Jesse Tainter.

Today was more of a glancing blow, and for some, a welcome opportunity to make cold cash.

"It's something to look forward to every year. It supplements our income," says McDonald.

Whether its shopping center parking lots, or school parking lots, the weather is providing enough of a break to move snow, so people here in Carroll County can move.
