1 Child Dies In Fatal Baltimore Fire, 3 Others Injured

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A horrifying tragedy has devastated a West Baltimore community. A toddler was killed when his home went up in flames. An adult and two young boys barely made it out alive.

Meghan McCorkell has the heroic efforts to try and save the family.

A neighbor and two men working nearby ran into that burning home, but for one little boy, it was too late.

As flames shot out of the Reservoir Hill rowhome, neighbors panicked.

"I said, `What happened to the kids?' He said, `What you mean?' I said, `There was kids in the house!'" said neighbor William Brown.

Three little boys and a man were inside the home when the fire broke out. A neighbor and two construction workers spotted the smoke and ran to help. One of the workers---who didn't want to go on camera---said he helped pull the severely injured man out of the home.

"I just see the man coming out of the house all burnt up," said witness Deanna Sanders.

The two workers then went back inside and grabbed two young boys. In cell phone video obtained by WJZ, you can see the worker come out of the house with the children. A one-year-old child never made it out.

Fire officials are now calling those construction workers heroes for running into the burning home.

"These gentlemen, they saw a situation. They raced to the situation and they did what they could do to assist," said Baltimore City Fire Captain Roman Clark.

Neighbors who know the family are in shock.

"I did know these as neighbors and I got kids myself so I just pray that everyone is okay," said Anthony Rowlette.

As fire investigators search through what's left of the home, the community is left to mourn.

"I am so sad to hear that because it was a child. It just makes you want to cry," said neighbor Felicia Bentley.

"It's sad," said neighbor Maurice McFadden. "Little innocent children getting hurt."

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The man and his other two young sons were taken to the hospital. The man was in very serious condition.

Investigators have not yet identified the child that died.
