Icy Roads Possible During Thursday Morning Commute

CARROLL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) --Carroll County roads are looking pretty good and that's a testament to the timing of the snow. It came a little later than expected and that gave road crews more time to prepare.

Derek Valcourt has more on the snow the clipper system brought to the region Wednesday.

Temperatures will plummeted Wednesday night and the concern was refreezing Thursday morning. State officials warn that ice spots could pose a danger.

"Just don't get complacent. Don't think that just because the beltway is okay that the ramp might not be slick. All it takes is a degree or two...and that make a big difference so our crews will continue treating the roads," said David Buck, SHA. "Our crews, as they always do, will stay with this for the duration.

The early work by state and local crews, laying down chemicals and salt on the roads helped to keep most major arteries open and clear. Drivers were pleased with what they encountered.

"The state did a good job on the roads," said one man

While the major roads remained relatively clear, snow did start to build up on some of the side streets and that's where drivers found tricky spots.

Those snow and slush-covered side roads posed enough concern that some school systems opted to close an hour early. Some parents are happy the administrators chose not to take any chances.

"You never know within the next hour or two how the roads are going to be," said one man.

Officials reminded drivers in these conditions, it's best to drive well below the speed limit.

Driveways, side streets and parking lots are still snow-covered and slushy. Those are the danger spots when temperatures plummet tonight.
