Mercy High, Hunt Valley Orchestra Announce Partnership

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (WJZ) -- Good news for a new community orchestra and an all-girls Catholic school in the city.

The Hunt Valley Symphony Orchestra was founded in 2013, but it did not have a permanent concert hall.

And, Mercy High School recently built a 600-seat state-of-the-art auditorium.

Now both groups will benefit from the space. The school announced Thursday that the orchestra will call Mercy home and will regularly interact with the school's orchestra.

"For the Hunt Valley Symphony Orchestra, they're able to perform in a concert hall that is beautiful and is able to provide excellent acoustics. For Mercy High School, our Mercy girls - they are able to perform with professionals, take master classes and for our dance troupe, perform to live music," said Mercy High President Mary Beth Lennon.

The orchestra is made up of 65 musicians and a chorale. They perform 10 concerts a year.

"My fellow musicians and I are delighted that the Hunt Valley Symphony Orchestra has a permanent home at Mercy High School," said Greg Lauer, founder and executive director of the orchestra. "The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Auditorium at Mercy provides a concert hall setting, complete with excellent acoustics. The 660-seat auditorium and ample parking will accommodate our growing audiences. Being based at a school helps us further our mission to promote music education to young people and to enrich the culture of our community."

The orchestra's first concert at Mercy High School will take place in The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Auditorium on Sunday, May 17, and feature Dvorak's From the New World, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Bernstein's Overture to Candide.
