WEATHER BLOG: Storm Update

The big story is the impending nor'easter Monday through Tuesday.

A piece of energy will dive out of the central Plains during the day today, spreading snow across the midwest from Chicago to Pittsburgh. This energy will dive into the base of a long wave trough, and begin to redevelop off the coast of NJ by Monday morning. By Monday afternoon, an area of low pressure will rapidly intensify off the coast, throwing significant amounts of precipitation back into the area Monday night through the day on Tuesday. With a stout area of high pressure to our north, the precipitation will be all in the form of snow. Also, due to the intense low pressure off the coast, a tight gradient will lead to gusty winds Monday night and Tuesday, gusting over 50mph at times.

**One very important factor is the track of this system. Any deviation from current thinking will have a large impact on snowfall amounts and impacts. If the track shifts slightly east, snow totals will lower. If the track shifts west, higher snow totals are possible.

Timing:
Snow will streak into the region this evening, and should be light through the night, accumulating a general 1-3" during this time frame.

By Monday, snow will continue at a light to moderate clip, accumulating an additional 3-6".

As the low pressure system begins to occlude during the day Tuesday, snow will gradually taper off during the afternoon, ending some time during the evening Tuesday.
Total Accumulations: As of now, it appears 3-6" is likely from tonight through Tuesday morning with locally higher amounts especially north and east.

Impacts:
-Snowfall will lead to snow covered roads and will make travel difficult especially Sunday night and Monday.

-Airport and travel delays are likely at BWI Sunday through Tuesday, with air traffic potentially being halted for a time Monday night into Tuesday during the heaviest snowfall and wind to our north and east at PHL/LGA/JFK/BOS. High pressure will briefly take control of our weather for Wednesday, before another storm may impact the region by Friday or Saturday.
