Just before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, rescuers say four kids ages 12, 8 , 12, and 13, walk across the Hillcrest Park pond in Lansdowne when a nightmare becomes reality.

"That ice is really melting, it just has a sheet of ice on it," said Johnson.

Ice that collapses within seconds.

Two boys were able to swim to shore while the two other boys are left fighting for their lives.

Officials say a pair of bystanders quickly jumped in saving one of the 12-year-old boys who was unconscious, but the final victim was submerged underwater no where to be found.

That's where a 13-year-old boy stayed for more than an hour, as rescue crews try using tools to poke for his body underwater.

"Every second counts," said Lt. Norman Simpkins.

Before divers find the teen buried under 8-feet of water--in cardiac arrest. He later died at the hospital.

"It was very murky, I was communicating with our techs in the water, you couldn't even see your hand in your face," said Simpkins.

All four were hospitalized, one remains in intensive care.

A frightening rescue that has a group of boys lucky to be alive.

"They blessed, that's not luck, that's not luck in that...that's a blessing," said Johnson.

Officials say temperatures in the mid-Atlantic almost never become cold enough to create a layer of ice that's thick enough for recreation.
