Baltimore Students Find Way To Honor March On Selma

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Reliving the march on Selma, a group of high school students marched from class to a local theater to watch the film "Selma," a movie that highlights the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rochelle Ritchie has more.

The entire student body at St. Frances Academy walked into the Charles Theatre to see the movie "Selma" after marching from their school in an effort to recreate the march that sparked an outcry for change in race relations across the country.

"I wasn't there so I could only hear but so much of people say to look at a reenactment. It would make me feel more appreciation for my history," said student Christian Lipscomb.

The students filled the theater with curiosity and popcorn to learn about King and others who had a significant impact on the civil rights movement.

"It's real shocking because you realize what your family members and ancestors had to go through," said student Keyon Smith.

"Selma" made its debut in theaters across the country last month. The movie tells the story of the march that would later spark the nation to support King's effort for equality and justice.

"With us coming to see the movie `Selma' today, it will really show some light to our students about the importance of understanding their African-American history," said Director of Residential LifeRev. Gina Dorsey.

The students' trip to the theater was paid for by a local businessman.

About 170 students attended the movie.
