Grants May Help Keep Baltimore Neighborhoods Strong

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Strong neighborhoods are a necessary part of any vibrant city.

As Mike Schuh reports, Baltimore seeks to keep its neighborhoods strong by helping them set up local events.

Pumpkins, a petting zoo and donkey rides might not seem like much, but it's the glue keeping neighborhoods strong.

"We viewed it as an opportunity to bring our community together," said Nayeli Garcia Mowbray.

She helped organize a chance for the Waverly Improvement Association to get around 400 neighbors to hang out, meet each other and build the bonds that make for a tight neighborhood.

"We put it all together and we were able to get $500 for our event," she said.

Though administered by the city, it wasn't city money. The Municipal Employees' Credit Union gave the city $40,000 to distribute to groups to put on such events.

You have about 5 more weeks to apply online. Garcia Mowbray is glad she applied last year.

"The money really gave us the seed money to be able to structure it so we had something to offer the community and really make it fun," she said.
