Baltimore's Washington Monument Cornerstone Believed Found
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A conservancy group says it believes the original cornerstone of Baltimore's Washington Monument has been discovered.
The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy said Monday that the 200-year-old cornerstone was found while contractors were digging a pit for a sewage tank off the northeast corner of the monument. It's unclear when the cornerstone was discovered.
The conservancy says it believes a time capsule from 1815 was placed in a hollowed-out well in the base of the stone. Its contents will be unveiled at an event Wednesday.
The monument was the first to be dedicated to President George Washington. Though the laying of the cornerstone was well-documented at the time, the conservancy says its location was not mentioned and had been lost to time.
