Should Freshman Be Forced To Sit Out?
A report today surfaced from the Diamondback, a student run newspaper at the University of Maryland, of a new proposal that the Big Ten has begun to discuss. At the center of the deal would make freshman student-athletes in football and basketball ineligible to play in their freshman seasons at school. University of Maryland President Wallace was quoted as a supporter of the proposal saying "What I like about the concept of the proposal is it puts right up front the basic issue: Are we basically a quasi-professional activity or primarily an educational activity? And if you support it, you are basically saying very clearly the No. 1 priority is the education of the students." Jeremy feels like the professional leagues would be in favor of such a rule. "I mean I think the NFL and NBA would love that. Another year of seasoning for players and the fact that they stay down for another year and mature a bit more. So they probably would have a better evaluation of these guys. But I don't like it."
Fans of college sports have become accustomed to the freshman one and done's in college basketball. Scott talked about the impact freshman have in the two sports. "I think as fans we've accepted the fact that kids are coming out of high school and some are going right from high school to the NBA. We all think that they can that they can play and it's across the board and you look at almost every major college basketball team in the country, and they have freshman contributing at a high level. Not so much in football. You don't see a ton of freshman contributing in college football."
Some callers weighed in and agreed with Scott and Jeremy that these athletes will find other outlets to play in. Paul from Bel Air said "These guys are just going to go to Europe and play for a year and then call back."
