New Exhibit To Include Remains Of Maryland's Founding Family

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Maryland Historical Society is developing a new exhibition representing the only physical remains ever found of Maryland's founding family.

"A Tale of Three Coffins: Living and Dying in 17th Century St. Mary's City" opens on Maryland Day, March 25, in Baltimore. It will include coffins that held members of the Calvert family from Maryland's early colonial era.

The coffins were discovered beneath the Jesuit Chapel in St. Mary's City in 1990. Human remains found inside match the forensic profiles of Philip Calvert, son of Lord Baltimore, and Calvert's wife, Anne Wolseley Calvert. Portions of an infant skeleton buried with the couple also will be displayed.

Some materials have been displayed before at the Smithsonian.

The exhibit runs through fall 2015. The coffins will be reburied in St. Mary's City.
