Emergency Repairs Needed On Baltimore's Fort McHenry Tunnel

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Workers are making emergency repairs to the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95 underneath the Baltimore Harbor.

Tamory Winfield, a spokesman for the Maryland Transportation Authority, says the northbound right tube of the tunnel was closed most of Sunday after a blockage was found Saturday night in the drainage pipes that move water in and out of the tunnels.

Crews reopened the tube for Monday's morning rush hour but were going to close it again between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Winfield says the tube likely will be closed again after evening rush hour Monday, starting around 6:30 p.m.

He says crews hope to finish the repairs by Tuesday morning. He says it's unclear what would have caused the blockage, calling it a rare event.
