Bob Haynie: Wells Is The Man Against Rutgers

Maryland senior swingman Dez Wells jumped over, around and between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Tuesday night in New Jersey. Wells put the team on his back late in the second half as the Maryland Terrapins earned a 60-50 victory at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Wells scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double as the Terps held off Rutgers to improve to 25-5 overall and 13-4 in the Big Ten. Maryland also secured a double-bye in next week's Big Ten tournament which will played at the United Center in Chicago.

The Scarlet Knights gave Maryland all they could handle, but Wells was too much for them down the stretch.

After Rutgers tied the game at 45 with 6:02 to play, Well scored six-straight points to give the Terps a lead they never relinquished. Dez would score 10 of Maryland's final 15 points.

On a night in which Melo Trimble was held to 10 points on 3-for-13 shooting, Wells provided the on the court leadership that this program had been lacking since Greivis Vasquez left five years ago.

Jake Layman chipped in with 14 for a Maryland squad that has now won six-straight games.

The Terps will wrap up the regular season this coming Sunday at Nebraska against a Cornhuskers team that has lost six consecutive contests. After that, it's on the Windy City and their first-ever Big Ten tourney.
