Defense Lawyer: Trial Likely In Grandparents' Slaying

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A defense attorney says a western Maryland man accused of fatally stabbing his grandparents will likely be found competent to stand trial.

The Herald-Mail reports that David Harbin made the comment during a hearing Monday in Hagerstown for 20-year-old Joseph Minoglio.

Harbin says he's awaiting a psychiatric report documenting improvement in Minoglio's condition.

Minoglio was committed to a state psychiatric facility in May after a judge found him incompetent to stand trial for first-degree murder in the March 2014 deaths of 84-year-old Joseph Michael Minoglio and 78-year-old Peggy Minoglio in their Keedysville home.

Minoglio allegedly has acknowledged stabbing the couple. His mother told police her son has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

His father has described Minoglio as a drug addict who had threatened to harm family members.
