Md. Man Gets 4 Years In Transgender Girl's Stabbing On Metro
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Maryland man has been sentenced to more than 4 years in prison after prosecutors say he stabbed a transgender girl on a Metro train.
Twenty-five-year-old Reginald Klaiber of Greenbelt was sentenced Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court. He pleaded guilty in January to assault with a dangerous weapon, with a hate crime enhancement.
U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr. says that Klaiber stabbed the 15-year-old girl in July "solely because of who she is" and that his office "will not tolerate hate-fueled violence" in Washington.
Prosecutors say Klaiber attacked the teen in broad daylight while they were on a green-line train approaching the Fort Totten Metro station in northeast Washington. Prosecutors say Klaiber asked her if she was a boy and why she looked like a woman before the attack.
