Md. Teen Dies After Being Hit By Car In Dover

DOVER, Del. (WJZ)--Deadly distraction. Family and friends of a Delaware College student from Maryland are sending a dire warning: pay attention.

This after the female student lost her life while jogging.

Gigi Barnett has more on how it happened.

19-year-old Brittany Paige was waiting for the weather to warm up to take park in one of her favorite pastimes -- jogging.

So on Monday afternoon, the Wesley College student from Dundalk, Baltimore County hit the North State Street Bridge in Dover, Delaware.

"When the weather broke, she told me, 'I'm going running. I'm going for a walk,' or something like that," said Jessica Holder, Wesley College student.

But Paige's desire turned deadly, witnesses say with her ear buds were firmly plugged in and looking down at her cellphone.

She stepped off the curb, walked through traffic stopped on the southbound side and began jogging across northbound lanes.

Paige never made it to the other side.

Investigators say the driver who hit her had no time to react. Now, police are renewing this warning.

"Pay attention to your surroundings. Put down the phone and look ahead of you," said Cpl. Mark Hoffman, Dover Police Dept.

Now fellow Wesley classmates are grappling with her death.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in her honor. Donate here.
