Rob Long: Women's Hoops Deserves A Little Respect

Maryland Women's Basketball Coach Brenda Frese is a regular guest on the Vinny and Rob Show throughout the college basketball season. Not only is 105.7 The Fan the flagship for Terps Basketball, but Coach Frese has been the most successful college basketball coach in the area for the past decade.

Now, I get it, some of you don't think women's basketball is REAL basketball. If you think high flying dunks and playing above the rim is the only way to play the game, you're right. It isn't real basketball. The women's game is played, for the most part, below the rim. Back door cuts and precise passes are a must. You almost have to run an offense and set screens and be creative to get open shots.

Wow, that sounds like the majority of the real population. I personally know about three males who do not play either in high school or college who can still play above the rim. When we play pick up, they play like, well, girls.

I mean, if you can dunk or smack the backboard when making a layup, you're not really playing basketball. You would think the women's game would be relative to most of the population who play basketball that way. I get it, you're not entertained. It's tough to be entertained when you're watching someone do what you believe you can do. Easier said than done.

Listen, I'm not advocating for more people to LIKE the women's game. It would be great but I can't control that. However, the blatant disrespect and bashing of high level athletes is getting old and tired. As a former college athlete, I guess I can respect when another athletes pushes themselves to other levels to be great. I can respect greatness, regardless of what gender it comes from. If you can't do that, get up off of the couch and do what they do. It will change you mind and your personal opinion.

I don't find NASCAR or watching soccer to be entertaining. However, I respect what these men and women do to be great at what they do. While I don't find it to be entertaining, I don't insult them publicly for their efforts. It's time we broaden our horizons. It's time to show a little RESPECT. To some of us, it's a foreign concept.
