'A Tale of Three Coffins' Exhibition Comes To Md. Historical Society

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-"A Tale of Three Coffins," may sound like an Edgar Allan Poe mystery, but it's the title of a new  exhibit that begins in Baltimore today.

Ron Matz has more on the new exhibit.

A discovery both spooky and breathtaking, A Tale of Three Coffins is the new exhibition at the Maryland Historical Society.

"We wanted the gallery space to look very different. We wanted it to have a very intimate feel, maybe a little bit spooky but because of the nature of the topic very reverential," said Alexandra Deutsch, Chief Curator Maryland Historical Society.

Reverential because the lead coffins contain the remains of members of Maryland's founding family, Philip Calvert, his first wife Anne Wolesley-Calvert and an infant.

"The coffins contain the remains of Philip Calvert, his first wife Anne Wolesley Calvert and an infant which they now believe to have been born to Philip Calvert's second wife. They suspect it was a girl who only survived to be about six months old," said Alexandra Deutsch.

Archeologists began explorations in the 1970's, the surprising discovery was made in 1990--giving an insight to the lives that were.

"It's such a miraculous story of discovery, they were doing some magnetic resonance on the ground and they detected there must have been something beneath the ground, a cluster of large objects," Deeutsch said.

This amazing exhibition runs through December 6th, then the three coffins will be re-interred beneath the chapel in St. Mary's County.

"These are human remains, but they tell very powerful stories about history that otherwise we wouldn't be able to access."

The remains of another day in Maryland.

Forensic anthropologists at the Smithsonian Institution Museum of Natural History assisted in making the exhibit possible.
